Terms of use
Last updated 8 September 2026
These terms are the agreement between you and Ascend. They say what the service does, what it does not do, and what each of us is responsible for. Please read them. They are shorter than most.
The one thing worth knowing before anything else: Ascend helps you find and prepare for jobs. It does not get you one, and it is not your recruiter or your agent. Section 5 explains what that means in practice.
1.Who we are, and how to reach us
Ascend runs the website at ascendcareers.co.uk. Write to hello@ascendcareers.co.uk about anything, including a complaint. It reaches a person.
2.Agreeing to these terms
By creating an account or using Ascend you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, do not use the service. Our privacy notice explains what we do with your information and forms part of this agreement.
These two documents are the whole of the agreement between us. If we ever publish extra terms for one particular feature, those extra terms win for that feature only.
3.Who can use Ascend
You must be 18 or over. You must give us accurate information about yourself, and keep your account details to yourself. One account per person.
Ascend is built for students and recent graduates looking for work in the United Kingdom. You are welcome to use it from elsewhere, but the jobs and the advice will not fit.
4.What Ascend does
Ascend reads your CV, and then:
- collects job adverts from job boards and company sites;
- compares your CV against the requirements each advert states, and tells you which ones you meet and which you do not;
- shows you a feed, alerts and a daily selection based on what you have told us you want;
- keeps track of the applications you have made and where each one has reached;
- suggests changes to your CV for a specific job, which you choose whether to accept.
5.What Ascend is not
We are not an employment agency and not a recruiter. We do not introduce you to employers, we do not put you forward for anything, and no employer pays us to find candidates. When you apply for a job you leave Ascend and deal with that employer directly. We never send your CV to anyone.
We do not promise you a job, an interview, or a reply. Nobody can. What we offer is a clearer view of which jobs are worth your time.
We are not your careers adviser, and this is not legal or immigration advice. If your situation turns on your right to work, get proper advice.
6.How the matching works, and how it gets things wrong
Ascend's judgements are made by software, including AI models, reading the words of your CV against the words of an advert. We judge only what an advert actually states. We do not, and cannot, judge how selective an employer really is or whether they would hire you.
It is sometimes wrong. It misreads CVs, it misreads adverts, and it occasionally rates a job in a way you would disagree with. Treat what you see as a starting point and not a verdict. Nothing here stops you applying for anything you like, and we would rather you applied for something we scored badly than skipped something you wanted.
Tell us when we get one wrong. There is a control on each match for exactly that, and it is the main way this improves.
7.What our AI writes for you
When Ascend suggests wording for your CV, that text is generated by an AI model. Generated text can be wrong in a way that is hard to spot: it can state something that is not in your CV at all, and it can state it confidently and fluently. This is a known behaviour of these systems and it is not a fault we can fully remove.
Nothing we suggest is checked by a person, and nothing is sent anywhere until you send it. Read every suggestion before you accept it, and check that it is true of you. You are responsible for what your CV says when it reaches an employer, whether or not we drafted the sentence.
Suggestions are not unique. Another student with a similar CV applying for a similar job may be shown similar wording, and we make no claim that anything we generate is original.
8.Job adverts come from somewhere else
Adverts are collected from job boards and employers' own sites. We do not write them, we do not verify them, and we cannot promise a role is still open, that the details are right, or that the employer is who they say they are.
Be careful with anything that asks you for money or for your bank details. A genuine employer does not charge you to apply. If a listing on Ascend looks like a scam, tell us and we will remove it.
9.Your CV and anything else you give us
Your CV stays yours. Uploading it does not give us any ownership of it.
You give us permission to store it, read it, copy it, and produce changed versions of it, and to pass it to the service providers named in our privacy notice so that they can do the same on our behalf. That permission exists so the product can work and it is limited to that. It covers changed versions because the CV editor makes one: a copy tailored to a particular job, which is a new document made from yours. Your original is never overwritten. The permission lasts while you have an account and ends when you delete your CV, except for copies sitting in backups, which go on the cycles our privacy notice describes.
What you promise us about your CV. That it is yours to upload, that it is accurate and not misleading, that you have the right to share everything in it, and that it does not contain another person's personal information or a current or former employer's confidential information without permission.
Keep your own copy. We are not a document store and we do not promise to keep backups on your behalf. Keep the original of anything you would mind losing.
When Ascend suggests a change to your CV, you decide. Suggestions are drafts. You are responsible for what your CV says when you send it to an employer, and you should read any change before you accept it.
10.Feedback and anonymous statistics
When you tell us a match is wrong, or send us a suggestion about the product, we may use it to improve Ascend without owing you anything for it. That is the point of the control, and it is the main way the matching gets better.
We also produce statistics from how Ascend is used, for example how often a kind of requirement is met. These are counts and averages that do not identify anybody, we may keep and publish them, and they survive the closing of your account. We will not try to work back from them to you.
11.What you must not do
- Upload anything that is not your own CV, or pretend to be someone else.
- Scrape, copy or resell the job data, or use automated tools against the service.
- Try to get at other people's accounts or data, or work around the security.
- Upload anything designed to manipulate the AI systems that read your CV.
- Use Ascend to break the law, or to harass anyone.
If you do any of this we may suspend or close your account. Where it is reasonable we will tell you first and give you a chance to put it right.
12.Our rights
Ascend's software, design, wording and the systems behind the matching belong to us. We give you permission to use the service for your own job search, personally and not commercially. Nothing here hands you any of the rest.
Our collection of job adverts is ours, even though the adverts are not. Each advert belongs to the employer that wrote it. The collection, how it is selected, cleaned, sorted and added to, is our work and our database, and we claim the rights the law gives in it. That is what section 11 is protecting when it tells you not to scrape or bulk-export.
"Ascend" and our logo are ours. Please do not use them without asking.
13.Email we send you
We send email about your account and about jobs matching what you asked for. You can turn job email off in your settings or through the unsubscribe link in any message. Some messages about your account itself we have to send, and those cannot be turned off while you have an account.
14.Ascend is in beta, and will change
The service is early. Features appear, change and disappear, and some of it will break. We may change or withdraw any part of it, and we may stop the service altogether, though we will give you reasonable notice and a chance to get your data out before we do.
15.Price
Ascend is free while it is in beta. If we introduce a charge we will tell you at least 30 days beforehand, and you will never be charged without agreeing to it first. Continuing to use a free service is not agreement to pay for it.
16.Closing your account
You can delete your account at any time from your settings. Deleting removes your profile, your CV, your tracked applications and the rest of your data, as our privacy notice describes. It cannot be undone.
We may close your account if you break section 11, or if the service closes. If we close your account for any other reason we will give you notice and time to take your data with you.
17.What we are responsible for
If we fail to meet these terms we are responsible for loss you suffer that is a foreseeable result of that failure. We are not responsible for loss that was not foreseeable.
Some things cannot be limited, and we do not try to. Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law does not allow us to limit. Your legal rights as a consumer stand whatever these terms say.
What we are not responsible for. Ascend is a tool for finding work, not a guarantee of it. We are not responsible for a job you did not get, an application you did not make, an advert that turned out to be wrong or withdrawn, or how an employer treats you. We are not responsible for the content of sites we link to.
Ascend is provided for your personal use. We are not responsible for business losses.
18.If something goes wrong
Write to hello@ascendcareers.co.uk and tell us. Most things are a mistake and we would rather fix it than argue about it. If we cannot sort it out between us, the courts in section 19 are open to you, and you keep every right you have as a consumer.
We have not asked you to give up the right to go to court, to join a group claim, or to use arbitration instead. Those terms are common and they are not fair to a consumer.
19.Law and courts
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales can hear any dispute. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland you keep the protection of your own law and can bring a claim in your own courts.
20.Changes to these terms
We will update this page when the service changes. If a change matters to you we will email you at least 30 days before it takes effect and say what changed. If you do not accept a change, close your account. The date at the top of this page always reflects the current text.
21.Anything else
Some of this outlives your account. When you stop using Ascend, the parts of these terms that only make sense afterwards carry on: what we each own, the permission you gave us for your CV while you had one, what we are responsible for, and which law applies.
Things outside our control. We are not responsible for a failure or delay caused by something we cannot reasonably control, such as a power or network failure, or a supplier we depend on going down.
If Ascend changes hands. We may transfer these terms to somebody else if the business is sold or reorganised. Your rights under them do not change, and we will tell you. You cannot transfer them to anyone else.
If any part of these terms turns out to be unenforceable, the rest still applies. If we do not enforce something straight away, that is not us giving it up.
